Common Questions

Before you ask in the community

The questions that come up in almost every visa thread — answered once, here.

How does H-1B sponsorship work?
H-1B sponsorship means a U.S. employer files a petition with USCIS on your behalf, since the visa is tied to the job rather than to you directly. They first register you in the annual lottery — 65,000 regular slots plus 20,000 reserved for advanced-degree holders — and if you're selected, they submit Form I-129 along with a Labor Condition Application confirming the role pays at least the prevailing wage. It's a real commitment on the employer's side, in paperwork, legal fees, and time, which is why it's worth targeting verified sponsor employers directly rather than applying blind and hoping.
How long does visa sponsorship take?
Timelines vary by visa type. For H-1B specifically, the lottery runs every March, selected petitions are typically filed by June, and standard processing then takes two to six months unless the employer pays for premium processing, which brings a decision in 15 calendar days. EU and UK skilled-worker routes usually move faster, often four to eight weeks once an employer has issued an offer, since most don't run an annual lottery. Either way, build in slack — start-date negotiations and processing backlogs are far more common than a clean, on-time approval.
How to get jobs abroad?
Start by narrowing down two or three countries based on where your field is actually in demand and how accessible the visa route is, rather than sending the same resume everywhere. Tailor your CV to local expectations, and lean on platforms that specifically track visa-sponsored roles instead of general job boards, since most postings there won't sponsor at all. Treat networking as seriously as applying — a large share of international hires still come through a referral or recruiter relationship, and be ready to talk through relocation logistics in interviews so employers see you've thought it through.
How to relocate?
Good relocations start months out: confirm your visa's conditions and any deadlines tied to it, then work backwards from your start date to budget for flights, deposits, and the gap before your first paycheck clears. Housing is usually the hardest part — short-term corporate housing or a sublet for the first four to six weeks gives you room to find somewhere permanent without signing a lease blind. Beyond logistics, leave time for the parts that don't show up on a checklist: opening a bank account, registering with local authorities, and just finding your footing.
